TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Tunisian scholar attending the 37th International Islamic Unity Conference called for establishment of a shared media outlet of the Muslim world to counter the West’s soft war.

Tunisian scholar Badri Khalafallah al-Madani

Speaking to IQNA on the sidelines of the conference, Badri Khalafallah al-Madani said the Western countries have launched a media and propagation onslaught against the Muslim world and that necessitates setting up a joint media outlet by Muslim countries.

As well as confronting the West’s propagations, such a media outlet could greatly contribute to enhancement of Muslim unity, he stated.

The University of Ez-Zitouna professor said Islamic unity is an immediate necessity today and to achieve it, Muslims must set aside their minor differences and focus on their commonalities.

He also highlighted the role that the younger generation in the Muslim world can play in boosting unity.

Asked about the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal on the establishment of a union of Muslim countries, he hailed the idea and said formation of a union is a successful experience that Europe and the US have had and the Islamic world also needs it today.

In order to achieve progress and success, Muslim countries need help from one another and the formation of a union can be very beneficial in this juncture, al-Madani went on to say.

He further hailed the recent agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to normalize ties after seven years and said it will, God willing, benefit all Muslims.

The 37th International Islamic Unity Conference, which is held both in-person and online, was inaugurated at Tehran's Summit Hall on Sunday.

More than 200 Iranian and foreign intellectuals and religious figures from various Muslim countries are participating in the conference, which is organized by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought. The event will conclude today, October 3.

The conference is annually held during the Islamic Unity Week.

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on October 3 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (September 28) as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
